One Month Anniversary

Literally speaking, my one month will be at 9:30pm today, but I'm experiencing some insomnia at the moment. Decided to write instead of aimlessly trying to sleep.

Thus far, NYC has been good to me. Considering the month as a whole. The beginning was rough. Let us dive into the recapitulation of the move...

My first apartment that had been rented since mid-June, was located in Harlem. Having lived in heavily Hispanic/Latino communities for most of my life, driving into Harlem was a culture-shock. Had I never watched a Jay-Z video or Nas video before moving to NYC, I would have probably died from the initial shock.

That same night, I spoke to Mara (Mara, if you read this...THANK YOU AGAIN! Girl, you saved my soul), and through my sobs I told her what I was feeling at that very moment. That phone call was followed by the sleepless night that marked the start of my new life in New York city. Senor, Senora, Mocoso, and myself slept (tried to at least) on the hard wood floors of the W 137th Street apartment located in heart of Harlem that night.

In the morning, cramped-up, eyes swollen from the crying, and the feeling to want to vomit, I got up to 8 different e-mails containing information for different apartments/studios in the city and in Brooklyn from Mara. One of those 8 listings happens to be where I currently reside, in Brooklyn.

The new apartment was ready for me to move in on September 1st, and in the meantime, I was living out of a suitcase in Boston for 6 days with Martha, and in the Bronx for 2 days with Tim. By this time I was worn out and ready to start actually living in NYC. I moved into my Brooklyn studio that very Wednesday on September 1st. The apartment had just been vacated and therefore nothing had been cleaned. My hot water was the color of urine, and cockroaches seemed to also be sharing my new space.

Since then, I've started school and now own 4 pieces of furniture. The four pieces include 2 dressers (only one has been built), a desk chair, and a bed. Up until last week, I didn't own pots, pans, spoons, forks, and other necessary kitchen tools. Nonetheless, things are coming together little by little. Brooklyn doesn't feel like home just yet, but I have a feeling that it will soon.

As for school...it's amazing. I'm enjoying every minute of it.

I would not trade NYC or NYU for the world.

My stride is quicker and
my waistline is less bigger

I'm starting to get the grove
of the big new york city hood

My choncha back home was green
but the NYC metro keeps it "G"

I'm living in the city that never sleeps
and maybe that's why I can't seem to rest

Home today is where the stupid bitch across the way
decided to move her shit out of the way

New York city...
where "people watching" is cool
and it's where
I get to stare
at men
everywhere!

Ok...It's 5 am.

Mimis time.
